Summary

The captivating closing installment to the Sands of Arawiya duology!

The battle on Sharr is over。 The dark forest has fallen。 Altair may be captive, but Zafira, Nasir, and Kifah are bound for Sultan’s Keep, determined to finish the plan he set in motion: restoring the hearts of the Sisters of Old to the minarets of each caliphate, and finally returning magic to all of Arawiya。 But they are low on resources and allies alike, and the kingdom teems with fear of the Lion of the Night’s return。

As the zumra plots to overthrow the kingdom’s darkest threat, Nasir fights to command the magic in his blood。 He must learn to hone his power into a weapon, to wield not only against the Lion but against his father, trapped under the Lion’s control。 Zafira battles a very different darkness festering in her through her bond with the Jawarat—a darkness that hums with voices, pushing her to the brink of her sanity and to the edge of a chaos she dare not unleash。 In spite of the darkness enclosing ever faster, Nasir and Zafira find themselves falling into a love they can’t stand to lose…but time is running out to achieve their ends, and if order is to be restored, drastic sacrifices will have to be made。

Lush and striking, hopeful and devastating, We Free the Stars is the masterful conclusion to the Sands of Arawiya duology by New York Times–bestselling author Hafsah Faizal。

Also very, very heartbreaking, I can’t tell you how many tears I cried during the whole book。 It was an emotional roller coaster; if there was a section called “Emotional Destruction”, this book would be in there。 The descriptions were detailed to perfection, the magic system was complex but perfectly executed。 I loved all the unique names for the characters and all their personalities; it was never a dull moment。 Also I won’t lie; the way that some of the characters died, like wow。 Talk about tugging on the heartstrings。 Hafsah really wanted to end some of her readers and wanted to see us cry。 That’s exactly what she accomplished; but this was tearing your heart out and throwing it across the room and then smothering it with a pillow, and then stomping on it。 I am sad that the journey for Nasir, Zafira, and the rest of the crew is over; but I also love that we get to see more of Hafsah’s work! I can’t wait to see what else she wants to destroy our souls with; I’m sure it will be just as amazing as the WHTF doulogy was! 。。。more

Faizal concludes her series with the same wonderful fantasy world-building and characters from her first book。 The characters in these books resonated with me as a reader and I really appreciated the narration style used。 This book also puts a different spin on the Arabic world and I loved how the terms were brought into it。 For me, there was just enough context and I felt like I was learning something special along the way。 I think this series will appeal to many YA ages and beyond。

If I could give this book 6/5 I would。 This book is a tapestry of brilliant storytelling made powerful by the fact that each character is so wonderfully woven into the narrative that the rest would collapse without it。 Every character is important in the world that she has built。 It’s not just about the romance, or the mission, or defeating the villain。 It’s about the dark and the light, the moments of grieving, and relationships that grow from diversity and hard times。 Incredible incredible boo If I could give this book 6/5 I would。 This book is a tapestry of brilliant storytelling made powerful by the fact that each character is so wonderfully woven into the narrative that the rest would collapse without it。 Every character is important in the world that she has built。 It’s not just about the romance, or the mission, or defeating the villain。 It’s about the dark and the light, the moments of grieving, and relationships that grow from diversity and hard times。 Incredible incredible book。 。。。more

That was me with this book 😂 And let me tell you Altair definitely had me crying cause he is one of my favorites 😍 He's one I wish we would have gotten more of。 Because we got little hints at what was going on between him and the Lion。 But we never got that full backstory that I know everybody wanted :( I feel like Zafira's journey wasn't necessarily given up on。。。 But you could definitely tell she wasn't the main focus like she was in WHTF。 It's also partially true because we had more characters POV's Don't get me wrong it was still a great journey to experience。 But I feel like if there hadn't been so many character POV's we, or just I, could have gotten to see more of Zafira's journey。Now Kifah。。。 I can't say this for sure。。。 but I'm pretty sure she's either aromatic or asexual。 Like I know she cares about her zumra inexplicably。 But we see all the hints that Altair drops。。。 and she cares for him, I just don't think it's in that way。 I also think that at the end of WFTS he realizes it and that's why he gives her that offer。 Because he cares for her, but he knows she can only care so much。 Not to mention it's just her personality as well。Nasir。 Nasir, Nasir, Nasir。 Gosh this boy 😌 his growth is probably the one that I'm most proud of! He went from only seeing himself as The Prince of Death, and that's the only thing he saw when he looked the mirror。 But then he met Zafira, and she showed him who he was, who he could be, what he could do。。。 and the best part is he not only realized it but he said it every time he saw her。。。 he might not have said it to her。 But we all know what the relationship they had she knew。Now I know we all say authors either give up the plot, or the romance。 But I think Faizal is so talented, and had the imagination, that I don't feel she gave up either one。 Most books are either plot driven, or character driven, or romance driven, and while the romance wasn't at 100%, it was there! This book, no let me rephrase that, this duology breaks all the barriers。 We get to know the characters, we get action, and adventure, and excitement, we get self-finding journeys, we get love finding journeys。 This book is quite literally the definition of perfection, even when perfection is not achievable。 It's that one thing you find in life that is so close to perfect that you just call it perfect。 I think it's become one of my favorite books / duologies in general。 I'll always have my number ones, but this definitely took a top five ranking 😌 。。。more

Thank god this book has ended。 The only reason I didn't dnf it is because I couldn't return it。 Had it been a library loan or whatever, I would have。 I had to force myself to read it, and while I did care for some parts they were a minory and not enough to keep my attention。Also, I love when authors include summaries of the previous books。 It helps a lot。 No, it didn't happen here。 Should haveooked for a recounting of the first book before reading this one。I really loved the first one, but this Thank god this book has ended。 The only reason I didn't dnf it is because I couldn't return it。 Had it been a library loan or whatever, I would have。 I had to force myself to read it, and while I did care for some parts they were a minory and not enough to keep my attention。Also, I love when authors include summaries of the previous books。 It helps a lot。 No, it didn't happen here。 Should haveooked for a recounting of the first book before reading this one。I really loved the first one, but this one was boring, dull and repetitive。 We have the Prince of Death struggling with what he feels for Zafira and how to tell her going from the first page to almost the last。 We've got Zafira thinking she is turning into a monster because of the book she is tied to also from page 1 to almost the last one。Not even the wit and charisma of Altair could save this hot mess of a book。 Maybe it would have beneffited from cutting ~300 pages and having a more sound plot around the Lion figure, the Ifrits and all that instead of delivering a half cooked story when it comes to him。I am sorry, but this book has been such a disappointment。。。 Bland characters, repetition, barely there plot。。。 Nothing of what I loved about the first one is there。。。 So much so that I am quite tempted to unhaul the duology, tbh。 。。。more

I wish I had the words to explain my love for this book。 Hafsah Faizal was able to pull every emotion out of me, from laughter to tears to tension to love, there was a version of it all in this book。 I fell in love with each character and their journeys, and the intricacy of them all。 The writing was absolutely beautiful and the plot kept me on my toes from the very first page to the very last。 I have never been so healed and yet empty inside after finishing a book。 It was such an amazing story I wish I had the words to explain my love for this book。 Hafsah Faizal was able to pull every emotion out of me, from laughter to tears to tension to love, there was a version of it all in this book。 I fell in love with each character and their journeys, and the intricacy of them all。 The writing was absolutely beautiful and the plot kept me on my toes from the very first page to the very last。 I have never been so healed and yet empty inside after finishing a book。 It was such an amazing story and I now feel so sad to have no more of this writing or these characters。 There are no others words I can use to describe this book, so in conclusion, please go read this duology, you are missing out otherwise! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I have a lot to think about when it comes to this series。 It really was like a comfort series for me where I did not feel anxious and tense while reading。 It is slow-paced and plot-driven and I'm usually very impatient when it comes to romance and action but I really enjoyed every chapter of this book and savored every word。 The Zumra have grown on me and I will be thinking about them a lot。 They all got the ending they deserved but Yasmine。 Like that woman lost her brother and her husband and l I have a lot to think about when it comes to this series。 It really was like a comfort series for me where I did not feel anxious and tense while reading。 It is slow-paced and plot-driven and I'm usually very impatient when it comes to romance and action but I really enjoyed every chapter of this book and savored every word。 The Zumra have grown on me and I will be thinking about them a lot。 They all got the ending they deserved but Yasmine。 Like that woman lost her brother and her husband and like what the hell I'm just going to imagine an alternative ending for her。 Other than that Nasir has grown on me and I'm no longer bitter against him。 Him and Zafira's ending was beautiful and I will be thinking of the "Because my heart can't contain it" for a long time and even other stuff that he said because the shit he said throughout this book were heavy and meaningful like wow Hafsah you did well。 Also loved Altair's ending and I am so happy for him and I just wish he gets the happy ending and love he has always wanted and deserved。 Will forever be my happy and comfort character。 Kifah is great no complaints about her I resemble with her a lot and I am just glad she found peace。 MY QUEEN/CALIPHA OF SARASIN ZAFIRA like wow her character development was something else。 Also will be thinking about her for a while and I appreciate her so much because of how much I can relate to her。 Okay now one word about Lana is that she was a good addition and even though she didn't have a great role she did well。 Hafsah's writing is beautiful and so well thought out and she literally writes the way I believe an Arab woman would write and it was beautiful。 I have no complaints with the writing and the story building and the ideas and real world references that were added。 I also appreciate how she spoke about how the ending is not always beautiful when there is really lots of trauma to unravel and she did not just leave it with them all living a happily ever after when really they were all struggling with their new positions。 I am looking forward to reading more from Hafsah and I will be rereading this series in the future for sure :) 。。。more
